Here is a selection of genuine case studies

Female child, aged 10 years, with autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia

Presented with severe anxiety, loss of eye contact, violent temper tantrums, short concentration span, perseverations (repeatedly asking same question), cravings for sugar, irritability, dry, bumpy skin on face and arms, occasional
asthma.

Tests performed

  • Gluten and casein peptides in urine — positive
  • Yeast/fungal metabolites in urine — positive
  • Heavy metal hair analysis — positive for mercury despite zero fillings; transferred via placenta
  • Food allergies/intolerances - positive for some foods

Treatment programme

  • Removed additives, caffeine, sugar and excess saturated fat from diet: made as wholesome as possible considering child’s eating habits.
  • Three-month trial of removal of gluten and casein from diet.
  • Long-term treatment with Nystatin — an anti-fungal agent but natural products can be used as an alternative.
  • High doses of Essential Fatty Acids — particularly EPA as in fish oils.
  • General good quality multi vitamin and mineral supplement to include anti-oxidants.
  • Glutamine and probiotics to improve integrity of gut lining/health.
  • Recommended Occupational Therapy.
  • Already receiving the appropriate educational support at school.
  • Dust mite covers on bedding.

Outcome after four months on programme

Initially during the first three weeks all symptoms worsened during the withdrawal stage. Then gradually over the next three months, both home and school reported child feeling less anxious, able to concentrate better, disappearance of perseverations, no re-occurance of asthma, skin softer although as yet still bumpy, tantrums reduced in severity, eye contact returned, cravings lessened, and child generally happier in herself.

However, when the slightest relaxation of the diet occurs, more of the symptoms listed occur, albeit briefly until diet is resumed.

Future Treatment

In this particular case, and for people with autism, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, this treatment protocol is likely to be long-term. For this child, the beneficial effects are slowly accumulating and may possibly reach a plateau after another twelve months of treatment. Mercury toxicity is an issue yet to be addressed, as is the Sulphation pathway, which is often inefficient in Autistics and people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.
